SSD Review Part Deux

SSD Review Part Deux

So, My last SSD review was, how shall we say, not so good. I waited a while to get a new drive, as things seem to have changed pretty substantially in the affordable SSD market. I got a hold of a G.Skill Phoenix Pro. I paid $130 for 60GB of storage, which is kind of pricey if you compare it to something < 1 TB. So, do I think its worth it? Do I think its a valuable addition to my system? Yes, and at the same time no.

Ethernet over Power Review

Ethernet over power lines.

How does this stuff work? Is it like magnets? Its all so mystical, but it is also very useful to those of us who are not living in our own home, or dont like cutting holes in walls to run ethernet lines. It also could be very useful to setup a data connection for a lan party.

What I am working with here is a pair of D-Link DHP-307AV units. Its a pretty basic setup, there were two wall warts in the box, a CD and some paper work. Previously I had run a 100ft ethernet cable from my data center upstairs to the HTPC downstairs. It worked, but it was ugly due to the route. I was considering wireless, but signal strength and bandwidth could be an issue. So I picked up these D-Link units, and gave them a try.

SSD Review

So, I managed to get my hands on a SSD drive, and I ran it through its paces. And like everything else I abuse, I thought everyone would like to know what I found out about the unit.

The unit in question is a super talent ultra drive. You can find the exact model here:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820609392

To make it as fair as possible, I used the same laptop, and just swapped drives between it. I had the same programs open during testing every time I did this as well.

I used HDTACH, The Dummy file creator from NOD32, and a defrag utility that I found with the option to fragment files. In both cases, These were fresh OTB drives, with a brand new image blasted on them.
We are using Vista 32 (SP2) to test with.

GTX260 Review

Well everyone, its about time for De-frag, and my yearly bit of upgrading is here. Ive been running on an 8800GT for about a year now, and I've gotten the itch for something else.  I was nosing around on the egg, and it seems that the GTX260's have come down to the under $200 mark. For me, this is the magic price point. I do not like spending more than $200 on a video card, hell, 200 itself is a bit hard to take. Im a cheap bastard what can I say.

I know what I can say, I can tell you all about it, and see if you want to upgrade or not! On with the review!

Phenom 2 Review

Welcome to the new _AND_ improved de-frag site. I think I have all of the bugs worked out, so this is the first post with any real meat in it. Enjoy!

Now, if you listened to last months fragcast, you will know that I recently dropped a P2 in my machine upgrading from a X4200. In my mind, it wasn't all that old, but it was showing its age in certain games, and especially in video editing. I held off, knowing that the P2's were coming. I waited, hoping that my M2nSLI Deluxe would support the chip. After spending some time in the forums, I was unsure.

The first report of the P2 trickled in that it worked in the M2N, so I pulled the trigger on a new 940 BE. Cost of admission was $225. Which was iffy at first, but after spending some time with the chip, I think its a hell of a deal. While I was at it, I grabbed another 2 Gigs of faster ram; to bring me up to an even 4Gigs. Even though winders will only see 3.2Gigs of it :P
